Linksys WRT400N

$130.00 Released March, 2009

Product Shot 1 The Pros:SIMULTANEOUS DUal-Band. WPA & WPA2. Lets you set bandwidth caps on either transmission band.

The Cons:No Gigabit. Looks weird. Firmware is a bit confusing in that you do have to click "save settings" on each page, doesn't queue them up and apply them all at once.

The Linksys WRT400N is a simultaneous dual-band Wireless-N router for enhanced wireless communications. A step up from the WRT320N, the Linksys WRT400N trades its peer’s wired Gigabit capability for dual Wireless-N bands (5GHz / 2.4GHz) that are designed to work separately, yet simultaneously.

This allows users to customize their configuration. For instance, one band can be used to surf, whereas the other can be configured for time-sensitive traffic such as music, gaming, and HD video. In addition, the WRT400N features an advanced SPI firewall with not just WEP, but also WPA and WPA2 security algorithms, giving it the ability to withstand heavy-duty hacker attacks. Additional features of the Linksys WRT400N router include MDI/MDI-X for no crossover cables, MIMO technology for enhanced range and fewer dead spots, and compliance with the draft IEEE 802.11n standard. The Linksys WRT400N retails for $129.95 and comes with a 1 year limited warranty.

dom: #linksys_wrt400n nice review, Omar. This thing does look really good with its simultaneous dual-band operation. Glad to hear it's not one of those half-baked products. Jun 14, 10

Omar: #linksys_wrt400n Hallelujah brothers and sisters I've finally found a damn router that actually works as advertised!

Setup wasn't a cakewalk, I tried to go against my tinkerer roots and just go with their wizard. Well the thing just died halfway through it, so so much for that. Going into the web interface directly was a cinch for me, but I'm somewhat knowledgeable in these matters, for a total noob the setup wizard should just work.

Administration is fantastic, not quite as many features as something like Tomato. For a built-in firmware there are plenty of security and performance tweaks you can make. It's all logically laid out, and they make it pretty difficult to shoot your own foot which is good for someone like me that knows enough to really mess things up, but not enough to fix the mess!

Performance is absolutely fantastic. I run this thing under pretty intense conditions, multiple devices constantly connecting/disconnecting, constant downloading while playing lag-sensitive games. This sucker hasn't hiccuped one bit the entire time.

I haven't tried out some of the other top-end routers such as the high-end Netgears, but I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this model to anybody. Jan 4, 10
