Netgear WNR854T

$120.00 Released December, 2006

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Attractive aesthetic. Wireless N support - has more range and many times the speed of the previous generation wireless G standard (with compatible wireless N devices). Many encryption methods including the currently uncrackable WPA2.

The Cons:Expensive for the majority of consumers - hasn't come down in price very much. No USB connectivity for use as a print/file server. Unstable, intermittent connection - requires manual reboots.

The Netgear WNR854T is a wireless-N router that was released in 2006. This router operates at the 2.4GHz frequency, supporting IEEE 802.11n (draft) as well as the wireless-b/g standards. The WNR854T sports a sleek square design that hides the router’s antennas, which are located inside the unit’s plastic case.

For users within close proximity to the router, one will find four gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, plus one gigabit WAN port. In terms of security, this router supports high-level WPA-PSK encryption, NAT, MAC address filtering and features a SPI firewall to moderate users and keep unwanted traffic outside the WNR854T network. While basic networking features such as IP reservation and content filtering are available, other features such as VPN connectivity and port reservation are missing. Netgear’s WNR854T does not have any USB ports, meaning a print server feature and Windows Connect Now (network key sharing via flashdrive) support are out of the question.
